Rockingham Continues to Lead the Way for Recycling in WA

Mortgage Brokers Rockingham talks about RecyclingIf you are thinking of taking out a home loan for a property in Rockingham, our mortgage brokers would like to let you in on a little secret: Rockingham is a very environmentally responsible city.

For National Recycle Week, held between 11-17 November 2013, Rockingham has been running a poster competition. From student submissions, the 21 best recycling posters will be placed on recycling bins across Rockingham to remind residents to recycle correctly and to make sure they don’t contaminate the bins, especially during the summer.

Those students who would like to enter the poster competition have until 30 November to submit their entry. They must be a student in the City of Rockingham; all classes from Pre-primary to Year 12 are eligible to create a poster. For a poster template and an entry form, interested students can visit the contest website:

Why Recycle?

Australia has one of the highest numbers, in the world, when it comes to waste generation per unit of population—approximately 400 kilos of waste per household every year.

Batteries are the most common form of hazardous waste in Australia. Batteries contain hazardous chemicals which can leach into the groundwater. They also contain dangerous heavy metals such as lead, nickel and cadmium.

More Australian trash is made of plastic than any other material. In 2003, plastic represented 36% of all trash in Australia. While no current numbers are available, it can be stated with relative certainty that the number probably hasn’t improved much if at all.

As of 2008, Australia was the number one world recycler of old newspapers. Most of these came from curbside collection systems.

Another study from 2008 showed that 6.17 million households had access to a computer. As of June 2013, there were 21.26 million mobile phones. All of these eventually need to be replaced and are hazardous to the environment if thrown away.
