When our mortgage brokers help provide home loans in Baldivis, their clients often remark about how friendly and social the people are. One of the best examples of this is the Baldivis Community Market, held the first Saturday of every month from 8am-12pm on the corner of Fifty Road and Baldivis Road.
The market is run by the Lions Club and all proceeds from admission go to charity. A donation is required for entry. The market consists of various vendors with booths, such as fruits, vegetables, drinks, food, jams and jellies, but that isn’t all. There is also a car boot sale where a lot of great bargains are found.
With approximately 64 vendors and 32 car booters in a typical month, the Baldivis Community Market has a lot to offer those who decide to visit on any given day. Really, though, the Baldivis Community Market is much more than a market—many of the people from Baldivis and the surrounding area turn the market into a monthly social event.
Community Markets as Social Events
Recently, The Open University did a study where they observed markets in cities and towns across England. The intent was to study what makes markets work so well as vibrant, social events for different communities and to examine diverse examples of social activity. Their findings were eye-opening for many.
While markets encourage social interaction for most segments of any community, they are more significant for older citizens, especially women. However, younger families also used markets for social space, mostly on the weekends. This combination of older people and young mothers seemed to gain the most benefit from markets as social spaces.
The vendors were found to be a small community within a community at many markets. Not only did they create friendships with each other, but also with many of their customers.
So, what makes a community market great? The study said that a diverse selection of local products, food vans or cafes on site, a vibrant community of traders and good management are essential.
How Does Baldivis Rate?
The Baldivis Community Market obviously wasn’t part of the study, but it has every attribute that a great market possesses.
